The Cabrini Clinic, the oldest free medical clinic in the United States helps as many of Detroit’s uninsured as it can. But this safety net can only catch 1,500 of the city’s 200,000 who have no coverage.

Sister Mary Ellen Howard, executive director of the clinic, has spent 13 years working long days to keep the clinic staffed and funded. She knows that access to care at the clinic is the only thing keeping many of these patients alive.
