The Cover America Tour happened in Summer 2008. Find out what we're doing now to improve health care. Visit www.PrescriptionforChange.org!
We made a stop at the People’s Community Clinic in Austin, TX last week and met story sharers, health care advocates, and a local Texas State Representative who joined us to help spread the word about the Cover America Tour and talk health care reform.
The need for reform in Texas is great. Texas has the highest rate of uninsured of any state in the nation - 24% compared to the national average of 16%. For those with coverage, the rate of premium increases outpaces the rate of wage increases tenfold. It's no wonder so many Texans are struggling to afford health care, and why thousands in the Austin area rely on safety nets like the People's Community Clinic as the only viable options.
The event was highlighted in the Austin Statesman:
Cover America has so far collected 45 stories and still has 23 more states to visit. The tour will end in Washington, D.C., where the video footage will be used as a tool to lobby officials for health-care reform. "People expect horror stories," said Meg Bohne, campaign organizer for Consumers Union. "But what we've found is that this is a slow-moving catastrophe. People are just trying to get coverage and living in constant fear."
