The Cover America Tour happened in Summer 2008. Find out what we're doing now to improve health care. Visit www.PrescriptionforChange.org!
We rang the doorbell of John and Kim’s house in Pelham, AL at 5:00, pleased with ourselves that we’d arrived impeccably on time after a three hour drive from Georgia. So when Kim said that John wouldn’t be home for another hour – around 5:00 – it threw us for a loop. We looked at our watches and then each other. We’d crossed into central time. (We’ve gotten a lot of advice for living on the road, but no one ever said, “Watch out for time zones.” That would have been a good one.)
But they graciously welcomed us back into their home at 5:00 (the "real" 5:00), where John told us about his unexpected accident and even more unexpected denial by their insurance company of payment for the emergency transportation to the hospital.
For John, this means working extra hours to pay down the $9000 bill they were left with. It's not the hard work but the additional time away from his family that takes its toll...especially when it's to pay off a medical bill that he thought would be covered.
