We crossed the northern border of California on our way down from Portland, OR, greeted by all 14,179 feet of Mt. Shasta (the second highest point in the state, behind Mt. Whitney). A straight shot from where we began in New York to California is about 3,000 miles but our odometer reads close to 12,000. The long way? The scenic route? Call it what you want... we consider it proof that we have truly gone to all corners to document Americans' health care experiences. And no complaints from the road crew when we get scenery like this along the way.
