While in Austin, Texas a few weeks back we sat down with Judith and learned that we aren’t the first ones to travel far and wide for better health care. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, osteoporosis, and mild depression Judith found that the prescriptions she needed were unaffordable even with insurance. This left her with only a few options: forego the medicine entirely, cut the pills in half, or look to other countries for help.
First it was Mexico, then Canada, and finally Israel. In fact, the only drugs she purchased in the US were over the counter. So Judith found a way to get affordable medication, but is this reasonable? Should Americans be making day trips to Canada and Mexico and scouring the internet for cheaper prescriptions drugs? Judith certainly did. And although she found a way to get the drugs she needed at an affordable rate, her story highlights just how far some have to travel for their health care needs.
I think all citizens of the USA should have access to the same coverage as our elected officials in Washington. If drug companies can provide medicine at reduced rates in other countries, the lowest rate should be the same for our citizens. As of now we pay the highest. What we pay should be the same around the world. Then we might have decent affordable prices. Start getting on the ass of your elected officials and you might get results.
